Whitestone Cottage
Nestled on the rocky shoreline of Whitestone Lake near Parry Sound, this water-access only retreat evolved from a modest cabin renovation to a thoughtfully designed new cottage, guided by a desire to preserve the scale and lake-facing presence of the original structure while expanding functionality and living space.
The new design maintains a low, respectful profile toward the water, with the taller volume set back on the site. Cascading rooflines bridge old and new exterior structure, creating a dynamic yet cohesive form that blends into the surrounding forest and stone outcrops. The 1,700-square-foot cottage includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a compact loft overlooking the living area, maximizing space without excess.
A three-season screened-in porch overlooks the lake and forest, with generous skylights filling the space with natural light. The pass-through window to the kitchen creates a seamless connection between spaces and encourages easy movement and informal gathering throughout the day.
Interior finishes are restrained and tactile: white European oak, painted shiplap, dark custom millwork, and blackened steel detailing create a calm, layered palette. Locally sourced Muskoka granite grounds the fireplace, while concrete sinks and dark stone surfaces are balanced by warm wood tones throughout.
